How ocean-plus-rail works
Most containers from South China to Chicago travel on a single through bill of lading. The container is loaded at Guangzhou's Nansha port, sails to Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle or Tacoma — or to Prince Rupert or Vancouver in Canada — and is transferred straight onto a train without being unpacked.
The train takes the container to a rail terminal in the Chicago area, one of the largest rail hubs in North America, where it's collected by truck for final delivery. This is known as intermodal or IPI (interior point intermodal) routing.
Customs clearance can take place at the port of arrival or, with an in-bond movement, at the inland destination. We choose whichever is faster for your shipment.

Rail congestion and how to plan around it
The weak point of intermodal is the rail leg. When the ports are busy, containers can wait days for space on a train, and Chicago rail yards can back up in peak season. How long containers are waiting for rail at each gateway is a key factor in choosing between Los Angeles, the Pacific Northwest and Canada for each booking.
For time-sensitive cargo, one alternative is transloading: the goods are moved from the ocean container into a 53-foot domestic trailer near the port and sent on by truck or rail. A 53-foot trailer holds more than a 40-foot container, which can offset the extra handling.
Delivering across the Midwest
From Chicago, trucks reach most of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio within one or two days. The region's large distribution clusters — around Joliet and Elwood, and along the I-55 and I-80 corridors — sit close to the main rail terminals.
