Two ways to reach the East Coast
Shanghai and neighbouring Ningbo handle more containers than any other pair of ports in the world. From there, cargo bound for New York and New Jersey can take one of two routes.
All-water via the Panama Canal
The ship crosses the Pacific, passes through the Panama Canal and sails up the East Coast to the terminals at Port Newark and Elizabeth in New Jersey — the core of the Port of New York and New Jersey. It takes longer, but it's usually cheaper and involves fewer handoffs, because the container stays on one ship.
West Coast plus rail
The container lands in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle or Tacoma and crosses the country by rail, or is transferred into a domestic trailer. It can save a week, but costs more, and adds a handoff where things can go wrong.
For most shipments we recommend all-water unless the timing is critical.

The Port of New York and New Jersey is the gateway to the most densely populated region of the US. From the terminals, trucks reach New Jersey warehouses the same day, and most addresses in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts within one to two days.
